Elkington, Shirley

Shirley was born in Galt, Ontario in 1939. Being the second oldest of 10 children, raised
mostly by a single Mom, childhood was not easy. At 16 years, Shirley got on a bus to
Preston, applied for a job at a factory and was successful. Her first pay went towards a
brand new coat, her first. That was the beginning of Shirley’s show of determination,
strength and desire to live a better life. Once her two boys were settled into school,
Shirley once again got on a bus, applied for a job at Canadian General Tower, and was
hired on the spot. Here she spent 36 happy years, before retirement in 2005.
Shirley had many creative passions including, knitting, crochet and embroidery. Over
the years, her family and friends were the recipients of many “love made” gifts that will
continue to be cherished.
Shirley loved hosting meals for the people she held most dear. Her table would be
overflowing, filled not just with food, but also with her deep desire to care for others.
Baking was Shirley’s passion. Her Christmas baking platters were anticipated by all,
with the fan-favourite: Shirley’s legendary butter tarts. Each fall, for over 30 years, she
lovingly made 4 dozen tarts for her son, Bryan, to share with his hunting club on their
annual trip. Shirley will be forever remembered by her daughter-in-law, Gayle’s family,
for her joy of Christmas, and those “love made” dessert platters.
Shirley loved to play cards at her Hope Bay cottage, around her dining room table at
home, or when spending time with friends. Always ready to have fun around the card
table, she was sure to put a “whammy” on her opponent’s card. Without fail, there was
“lunch” mid-way through a card night, or on a lazy afternoon at the cottage; Shirley’s
love language was food.
Shirley cherished her trips to England with her husband Stuart; Saturday card days,
travels and laughter with Lois and John.
