Samuel SK Chong
Samuel SK Chong
August 8, 1948 ~ October 22, 2023
With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Samuel SK Chong. At the age of 75, Sam had a fulfilling life, though we thought his time with us would have been a bit longer.
Born in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Sam was the 6th of nine children and now joins his father Frank, mother Grace, brothers Victor, Louis, and sister Charline.
He is survived by his wife Shu-Shar Chong (nee Wang), sons How-Sen (Annette) and How-Yune (Uppala), his brothers Bernard (Cecilia), Frederick (Daisy), Maurice and sisters Alice (Khi Chung) and Helen (Tang).
He will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends.
As a young man, Sam grew up on the edge of the Borneo rainforest. He tapped rubber trees and climbed Mount Kinabalu in what is now a national park. He immigrated to Canada in the 1970s, spending time in Victoria and Sudbury before moving to Toronto to earn his Engineering Certificate at what was then known as Ryerson Polytechnic. He became a waterworks engineer, working for the town of Oshawa and the City of Markham.
Sam enjoyed reading and had an extensive and eclectic personal library spanning a wide variety of topics that he had collected over the years. He also enjoyed travelling, and went on many excursions with his family and friends.
Sam was an avid birder. He was fond of blue jays and cardinals. He spent many hours watching and feeding the birds. He was also very fond of traditional Chinese food, and was lucky to enjoy his wife’s cooking. Even in his later years, he would still tend to the yard and plant vegetables in the garden. He was known by neighbours as the guy in the neighbourhood who would trim trees with a machete.
He was a quiet and humble man who will be fondly remembered for his intelligence. He will be sorely missed.
