VIOLET (Bell) WADDLE
In her 103rd year, our Matriarch, Vi Waddle (nee Bell) has been summoned home on Sunday
September 17, 2023 at St. Peter’s at Chedoke Long Term Care.
She is survived by her loving children Dennis (Ellen), and Brenda Thorogood and grandchildren,
Debbie, Jason, David, Brandon, and four great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren
in England. Predeceased by her beloved husband Verdun and dear son Bruce, and siblings Bill,
John, and Sally.
Vi was an amazing woman who defied the odds by living independently, with declining vision,
until age 100. Her life span touched on the following: a Belfast immigrant at age 8; worked for
the war effort at Westinghouse in 1940; helped Dad develop a successful Fuller Brush
enterprise:and became a golf addict in her 50’s.
She was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church (formerly Eastmount) where she was a
soprano for the choir spanning four decades. If there was an ‘event’ in the church you can bet
that she would be at or near the epicentre. Her love of music accompanied her always.
Mom was a diminutive dynamo. She was an avid walker until 100 yrs of age. Her motto was
KEEP MOVING and (pass the Bailey’s please). She possessed a great sense of humour and a
quick wit. She elicited smiles, laughter, and head-shaking wherever she appeared.
Her heart, spirit, and tenacity to overcome all obstacles was and will always be an inspiration.
Cremation and a private family service has taken place.

I loved Vi and will always cherish my memories of her. We had so many wonderful times together, whether it was going to lunch, dinner, out exploring—or even attending Trinity Presbyterian, where she knew virtually every hymn by heart.
She truly was fiercely independent, as evidenced by her tenacity in insisting on living alone until well into her 90s—despite her diminishing eyesight. When she was in her late 80s, I remember broaching the subject of her possibly using a walker as her knees were developing some arthritis, and she quickly made it very clear that she was, “Not going to use one of those things that ‘old’ people use.”
To the family, I offer my deepest condolences in the loss of your mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Remember that those we love, and respect, never truly leave us; they remain with us in spirit, through memories, in the legacies, the lessons, and values they leave behind.
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers at this time.
