Affirmation – Savage Garden
I believe the sun should never set upon an argument I believe we place our happiness in other people’s hands I believe that junk food tastes so good because it’s bad for you I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do I believe that beauty magazines promote low self-esteem I believe I’m loved when I’m completely by myself alone
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can’t appreciate real love until you’ve been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don’t know what you’ve got until you say goodbye
I believe you can’t control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe that your most attractive features are your heart and soul
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I believe the struggle for financial freedom isn’t fair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can’t appreciate real love until you’ve been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don’t know what you’ve got until you say goodbye
I believe forgiveness is the key to your unhappiness
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed
I believe that God does not endorse TV evangelists
I believe in love surviving death into eternity
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can’t appreciate real love until you’ve been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don’t know what you’ve got until you say goodbye
There are many things that we tend to believe in, from the smaller things like the products and services from a company, just like maybe you believe in the chef to give you nice meals every time you visit your favorite restaurant to the bigger things we put into faith like our spouses being loyal or perhaps we believe Elvis Presley is still alive somewhere or Tupac Shakur will be resurrected one day, but we jest. What we really want to put forward is that we believe in people, friends, and family, to be at our side no matter what and so when somebody who’s important to us passes away, the impact in our lives would be so great it would feel too unbearable.
With all the unhappiness brought about by losing someone we love, believing that the future would be good despite what happened certainly can help get us through some really dark times. This is what Savage Garden’s Affirmation wanted to convey among many other things.
The song is quite upbeat so while this may not be the first choice for a funeral song for most people, but it can be one of the many unique cremation memorial service ideas that you can choose when parting from your deceased loved one. Affirmation’s lyrics are a set of “I believe’s” in which the speaker lays down a set of rules that support a better outlook in the world and would, therefore, lead to a happier life. The first stanza of the song says things such as, “I believe the sun should never set upon an argument/I believe we place our happiness in other people’s hands” then proceeds to mention something seemingly small but true nonetheless, “I believe that junk food tastes so good because it’s bad for you” and “I believe that beauty magazines promote low self-esteem”. These lines are all then summed up in what would be the whole point of the first stanza which says, “I believe I’m loved when I’m completely by myself alone” which basically means accepting yourself for who you are.
After having established to love yourself, the chorus set is set out to tell you how to conduct yourself when facing the world, or at least that’s what the speaker of the song chooses to believe, “I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned/ I believe you can’t appreciate real love until you’ve been burned/ I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side”. This is a rather practical way of moving about the world as well as it is an astute observation on how life works out, generally. However, the last line in the chorus may be the one that can strike a chord on the people who lost just lost somebody, “I believe you don’t know what you’ve got until you say goodbye”. Thus, it is important to appreciate all the people we love and cherish their company because we can never know when we’ll have to say goodbye to them for good.
So, if you knew a person who was dear to you, recently passed away and believed the things that were asserted in this song, then this may be the ideal one last song he or she may want to impart to those who attended his or her funeral.
