Verna Lynne Hannaford
1950-2026
It is with sadness and a measure of relief, the family of Verna Lynne Hannaford (née Cragg) share the news of her passing, with her daughter Juanita by her side, on October 3, 2026, after a lengthy illness, and extended hospital stay.
Verna will be deeply missed by her four children, Lenisa (Richard Malfait), Juanita (Efrem Sandy), Aniela (Brian Whalley), and Tadeusz Hannaford. She was lovingly known as “Grammie” to Victoria, Brianne (Michael), Amber, Jade (Tyler), Blake, Brielle, Miriam, Kohl, and Autumn, as well as her great-grandchildren; Shiloh and Rylee. Predeceased by her husband of 40+ years, Blake Hannaford, four months to the day prior to her passing (2026); her parents, Tadeusz Karwacki (1982), and Ruth Cragg (1994); and her grandparents “Dad Lorne” (1992), and “Momma Nita” (1965).
Verna enjoyed crafting, which included knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She was proud of her work and volunteerism over the years, with several organizations and individuals. Verna would always be willing to share her experiences with others, and the importance of the organizations she was affiliated with.
Verna was proud of holding dual US/Canadian citizenships. She born in Great Falls, Montana, June 19, 1950, and grew up in Southwestern, Ontario. Verna married, raised 4 children, then, moved out to British Columbia once her kids were grown. She enjoyed travelling. Verna returned to Ontario, yet she loved the mountains and always talked of returning.
Verna’s family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Roxanne Buck, Verna’s lifelong friend since adolescence. Roxanne remained a constant source of friendship and support to Verna and her daughter, right up until Verna’s passing. No words can express how thankful the family is to Roxanne for her dedication, loyalty, and commitment to the friendship she shared with Verna.
Verna’s family would also like to thank Jim Harris for his unwavering friendship and support over many years; Will Watering, for his friendship as Verna’s neighbour, and always being just a phone call or text away; and Vikki Wells, for her time, messages of support, and kindness.
Finally, Verna’s family would like to extend an abundance of thanks to all of the doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, and support staff at the Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines, along with the entire palliative care team at Douglas Memorial Hospital in Fort Erie. The professionalism, compassion and kindness extended to Verna was second to none and greatly appreciated.
