In Loving Memory of Susan Vivian (Baird) Aubert
January 23, 1952 – September 21, 2026
Our hearts are filled with sadness as we share the news of the passing of our deeply loved and cherished wife, mother and grandmother, Susan Vivian Aubert.
Born in St. Catherines, Ontario on January 23, 1952, Susan was the eldest of Eleanor and Kenneth Baird’s 3 children. She moved to Hanover with her family in 1955 and then to North York in 1963, where she met her soulmate, Greg, at Westview Collegiate Institute in the 11th grade. Their life partnership began at age 17 and continued to grow over the next 57 years. They shared a rare kind of love; one built on deep understanding and respect, unwavering devotion, and a lifelong commitment to one another. They stood steadily united through everything life brought their way. Despite the odds against them as a young couple with a new baby, their relationship flourished to become a stellar example of the truest essence of love, that has been an inspiration to those who have known them. Through great sacrifice and determination they worked hard together to build a beautiful life and created a loving home in which to mindfully raise their 4 children. Susan was fiercely devoted to her family. Her children were the greatest joys in her life and their happiness and wellbeing came above all else. She played a prominent role in her grandchildren’s lives. They all continue to admire her and always revered her advice and opinions. She had a special way of making each child feel uniquely loved and understood, always recognizing and celebrating what made each of them who they were. She led by example, teaching them the values she held so dearly through the way she lived her own life. Her kindness, patience, compassion, and strong sense of right and wrong were lessons she passed on to her children, and values they will carry with them always.
Susan was a thoughtful, caring person who had a special affinity for connecting with people. Anyone who met her felt at ease in her presence. She was genuinely interested in others and their life journeys. Susan had an eager curiosity about the world. With Greg by her side, she loved to explore and delighted in discovering different places, cultures and cuisine. All in all they travelled to more than 40 countries and 5 continents in recent years. Few things matched the happiness she felt when she had the people she loved gathered around her. Over the last 50 years, Sue and Greg’s home was the hub for family events and special occasions as they hosted every Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Halloween, New Year’s dinners and birthday celebrations. Susan was known and appreciated for being the glue that bonded the close family ties through her continuous effort and attention to nurturing family connection.
On August 28th, Susan and her family learned that the unexpected and sinister cause of her recent malaise was an aggressive, terminal cancer. Upon hearing this diagnosis, she responded with stoic acceptance, saying, “I’ve lived a great life, better than I could have ever imagined.” Those words reflected the life she had built, the love she had shared, and the gratitude she felt for the life she had been given. The day after receiving this fateful news Susan wished to take advantage of the beautiful summer weather and spent the afternoon on the beach in Port Dover. She fully enjoyed, what turned out to be, the last outing with her family. She repeatedly mentioned how nice it felt to lay on the sand and wished the evening and time to leave hadn’t come so soon.
Susan courageously faced her new reality with quiet resilience, dignity and grace. The final weeks of her life were spent at home with her family and included visits from her siblings, extended family and close friends from near and far. She was lovingly cared for by her family and the palliative team, including her nurses Irena and Bailey, who both grew very fond of Susan. Her pain and suffering came to an end 3 ½ weeks after her diagnosis when she died peacefully on the morning of September 21st, surrounded by her family.
Susan will be forever missed and treasured by her beloved husband Greg, by her children Andrea, Cameron (Whitney), Clark (Sarah), and Emily (William), and by her 9 grandchildren Joshua, Jacob, Noah, Madeline, Sophie, Chloe, Julian, Oliver, and Olivia, as well as her siblings Gail and Brian Baird.
In keeping with Susan’s wishes, cremation took place after a small family gathering to say farewell. A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers please consider performing an act of kindness in Susan’s memory; make someone feel welcomed, cared for, and valued.
