It is with sadness to announce that Ronald (Ron) Joseph Long passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, to stomach cancer. Ron was the beloved husband to his wife Vivien Long, an incredible father to Andrew Long (Talitha), the brother of Diane (Ralph), and predeceased by his parents Irene and Harry, his sister Elaine (Mike) and brother Peter (Jean). Ron was a dear uncle of many nieces and nephews and took immense pride in his family.

Ron, was born on November 19, 1953 in Hamilton, Ontario. During his career, Ron worked for CN Rail where he became involved in the labour movement and was elected General Chairperson of the United Transportation Union. He was a fierce advocate for the rights of workers during his tenure. Following his retirement with CN Rail, he joined B and S Associates as a paralegal where he continued to advocate on behalf of workers.
Ron will be remembered for so many things including his intelligence, kindness, and sharp sense of humour. He was a sports enthusiast with a passion for playing and watching golf with his son. Ron also had a deep passion for music, specifically blues. He would attend live music events with his wife Vivien where they created connections with both the musicians and the blues music community. In Ron’s retirement, he also became passionate about photography where he would take photographs of nature, concerts, and his family. He was often credited for the excellent photographs he would take at live concerts and events, which will be part of his continued legacy.

Ron’s family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Ian Anderson House for their support of Ron in his final weeks.

    I knew Ron as I have been friends with his son Andrew for a long time. Ron has been a great influence on Andrew’s life. It is clear to me after reading the obituary that Ron meant a great deal to many, because he truly cared about them. My thoughts are with you all, Alex.
