Michael John Bubna
1951-2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael John Bubna on October 17, 2026, at the Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines, at the age of 75. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ann-Marie. He is survived by his daughter, Mikaela, who was his pride and joy and who misses him very much.
Michael was born on January 6, 1951, to Oksana (née Kowal) and Michael Bubna. Raised in St. Catharines, his parents instilled a great love and respect for his Ukrainian heritage, which he honoured throughout his life.
Michael had a great love for classical music. As a young child, his parents would take him to concerts in Montebello Park, where his mother noticed that he would wave a stick around while the musicians performed as if conducting the orchestra. She decided to enrol him in piano lessons. This decision shaped the course of his life. He earned an Honours Bachelor of Music in Performance in 1975 from Western University and a master’s degree in Piano Performance at the Eastman School of Music in 1977.
While working in publishing as a sales representative for Pearson, he continued to perform as a soloist and an accompanist. He joined Trio Verkhovyna, doing concerts at various venues in Canada, the United States, England, and Australia. He was also part of several choirs throughout his life, including Burlaka Men’s Choir. His favorite composer was Chopin, but he also enjoyed playing songs people could sing along with, like Christmas carols, as well as traditional Ukrainian folk songs.
An avid reader, Michael was extremely knowledgeable about world events and enjoyed a good political debate. He was a formidable opponent in Trivia games and a competitive euchre player.
Michael loved his family and friends deeply. He will be remembered not just for his incredible musical talent, but also for his sense of humour, generosity, and hospitality.
Forever remembered. Rest in peace, Michael.
The Funeral Mass to honour Michael will be held at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 6248 Main Street, Niagara Falls, on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. As expression of sympathy donations to the Kidney Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family.
