Florence Amy James
Florence Amy James was born November 21, 1937 to her late parents Rita (Evans) James and George James Sr , in East Preston, Nova Scotia. The mainstay of her life was living with her grandfather, A.W. Evans and grandmother, Jean Evans. She gave her life to the Lord at age 13 and served in several organizations and committees in her community of East Preston and the African United Baptist Association. Florence attended the Royal Conservatory of Music and graduated from Halifax Vocational School. As organist for the East Preston United Baptist Church for many years, she was blessed to perform with various choirs and groups in the Black communities throughout the province. Florence was employed with the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, NS until moving to British Columbia in 1965.
After relocating to Mississauga, Ont. in 1975, Florence was employed with the federal government until she retired in 1991 and returned to East Preston where she worked alongside her sisters at the family bookstore until returning to Mississauga in 1994. A faithful adherent at Faith Alive Christian Centre, Florence resided with her daughter Sharma, the light of her life, grandson Lyric Darnell, and son-in-law Charles in Mississauga until her transition on September 8, 2026.
She is survived by her daughter Sharma Katheryn Colley Jackson, son-in-law Charles Jackson, grandson Lyric Darnell Allen W. James; siblings George Jr., Regina, Diane, Primrose, Mesi, Elizabeth, and Janice (Murphy) Beals; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; godchildren, Peter Evans and Melinda Diggs.
A celebration of life will be held at New Beginnings Ministries,
26 Cherry Brook Rd in Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia on Friday, September 25th, 2026.
Visitation: 11 am to 12 pm. Funeral starts at 12 pm.
