Hayes, Monica

Monica Josephine (McLaughlin) Hayes

Monica Josephine (McLaughlin) Hayes was born on February 16, 1931. She was a country girl, born and raised in Ireland. 1 of 12 siblings, she was the 3rd youngest, but the last to join the rest of the McLaughlin clan having lived a month shy of her 91st birthday.

Monica left for England to become a caregiver in many homes and devoted her life to looking after others. She was free-spirited and went where the wind blew. And those winds eventually took her to Canada, where she met her husband-to-be, Lawrence William Hayes. She arrived in January of ’64, was married by November of the same year, had one child, daughter Donna in September of ’65, and was shockingly widowed in July of ’66. Despite pleas from her family to return home to Ireland to raise her daughter, she stayed in her new home, Canada. Monica dedicated her life to raising her daughter, and later to being the best Nana to her two granddaughters, Maeve and Camryn. She was also a wonderful mother-in-law to Sam.

Everyone who met Monica fell in love with her. Her mark on this world has been profound. She was a tremendously kind, selfless, warm, gentle, loving, compassionate, generous, gracious, and non-judgemental woman who will be dearly missed.
