It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anibal Aires, age 64, on August 26, 2026 at Toronto, Ontario.
Anibal was born on February 13, 1962 in Alantejo, Portugal and lived a life marked by his love for his family, his strong work ethic, and his ability to tell you exactly what he thought. He is survived by his mother Rosa Aires, wife of nearly 45 years Fatima Aires, son Angelo Aires and daughter Stephanie Dougherty (Andrew Dougherty), granddaughter Marlowe Dougherty, and sisters Clara Aires, Susana Silva (Paulo Silva) and many nieces and nephews and predeceased by his father Francisco Aires.
The family will be holding a public visitation on August 31, 2026 at Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga http://www.uucm.ca(84 South Service Road, Mississauga, Ontario L5G 2R9) http://www.uucm.cafrom 6pm-8pm for those who would like to celebrate his life. He will be laid to rest, in Woodstock Ontario, at a private family-only ceremony.

To Anibal’s Family,
My sincere condolences to you and your family during this very difficult time.
It was with great sadness that I received the news of Aires’s passing. He was never referred to or addressed by his given name in the work place. He was always, “Aires.” He was certainly someone who left a lasting impression on those around him.
As an instructor for the TTC, I would often call upon Aries for access to subway trains. He was always hard at work, managing the positioning of trains in the Greenwood yard. Whenever I approached him, he would look up from his desk and say, “I’ll be with you in just a minute,” always accompanied by a smile.
Aries was a true character in the workplace—in the most positive sense of the word. He brought a personality that made him memorable to everyone who had the pleasure of working with him, including locals in the neighbourhood.
I feel fortunate to have known him and to have shared those small moments with him over the years. My thoughts are with his family, friends, co-workers, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
May he rest in peace, and may you find comfort in the many memories he leaves behind.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Aires.
I will always be grateful for the time he spent teaching me, answering my questions, and passing along the lessons he had learned throughout his many years of service. People like Aires leave behind more than memories. They leave their knowledge, their guidance, and a lasting impact on his coworkers, friends, and family. I am fortunate to have been one of those people.
Rest in peace, Aires. Thank you for your guidance, your wisdom, and everything you taught me. You will be missed, and Greenwood will not be the same without you.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Aires’s passing. As a long-time co-worker and friend, I had the privilege of knowing him for many years. He was the kind of person who left a lasting impression — hardworking, straightforward, and always ready with a smile or a few honest words that made you feel seen.
Aires had a presence that made the workplace better. He approached his work with quiet dedication and treated the people around him with genuine respect. Those of us who shared that time with him will miss him greatly.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I had the privilege of working alongside Aries, and he left a strong impression on me. He had a big personality, spoke his mind, and brought years of knowledge and experience into every conversation. We shared many hours talking through work and repairs, and I’ll always remember how he jokingly called me ‘Filipino’ even though I’m Latino. He will be greatly missed by the people he worked with. He was one of a kind that was always there if you needed help to talk and for a good laugh.
