HUBERT (HUGH) ARTHUR WILLIAM
SKEELS
July 31, 1926 – January 3, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family announce the peaceful passing of Hugh at 95 years old – a much loved husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather.
Born in Chatteris, England, Hugh was the son of Arthur William and Elizabeth Skeels (née Starkey), brother to Rene (Wilf) and Tom (Marj) (all deceased). World War II veteran with the 3rd Kings Own Hussars – British Army. Emigrated to Canada in 1947 and met his future wife, Joan (née Barrett).
He was a long-time employee of Dufferin Construction until retirement. He was an avid traveller, sports enthusiast and loved to cook and eat a good meal.
Survived by his beloved wife, Joan. Loving dad of Jim, Pat, Peter (Franca), Mary (Lester), Michael (Josie), and Joan. Adored grandfather of Jessica, Mark (Jessika), John (Elecia), Paul, Shane (Maria), Phillip (Michelle), Michael (Julia), Jennifer (Ricky), Samantha and Stephanie and great-grandfather to Emjay, Alexander, Maxwell and Leora.
Many thanks to the wonderful and compassionate staff at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Hughie had a very unique personality. Great sense of humour. He told me he was a Viking and I remember the times in the basement living room when he would blow the antler horn☺️ Always brought uproarious laughter from everyone present. He was the King of Fresca. Upon arriving at the house, I would be offered a rum and Fresca. Hugh would make the first one, and then you we were on your own. His Yorkshire pudding was the Best! Loved Sunday suppers on Haymarket. I have so many wonderful memories, but most of all, the love and kindness he always showed me over the years. I wish I could have spent more time with you, “Dad”. You are missed xx
Happy memories of the times you came and stayed with us and of our visits to Toronto.
A life lived to the full.
God bless.
I will miss you very much grandpa, but you will always remain in my heart <3
My condolences to the Skeels family .I have a lot of fond memories as neighbours when we were kids. Peter , your dad sure came through big time for those Beatle tickets.
On our road trips to Toronto many years ago as kids we got to visit Grandfather Barrett and other family including Aunt Joan, Uncle Hughie and many cousins. There was always a warm welcome and lots of fun at their house. Luckily a few years ago I was able to visit them and shared stories. He was much loved.
Our sincere condolences to the family.
Mike, Patricia, Joan, Sheila and Mary Lisa – children of Jim and Mary Barrett
To Joan, Joanie and the entire Skeels family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. In those quiet moments at the office, Joan always had endearing accounts of Hugh living life to the fullest – in absolutely everything he did. And, I will always remember our flight back from Las Vegas. I know he will be dearly missed.
I am sorry to hear of your loss. That is a beautiful picture. It has been many years, but I still recall Uncle Hughy’s hearty laugh and how he loved a good time! I hope that you are finding comfort together as you share special memories. Love, Ann Marie
Rest In Peace, Grandfather
