It is with deep sadness to announce the passing of Smriti Kana Samanta (Patra) who passed away on September 19, 2024 peacefully in her sleep. She was 82 years old.
She was a beloved wife to her husband, Pankaj K Samanta. A devoted mother to her daughters Sampa and Lisa. Cherished Dida of Asha and Ajay and Mother in law to Sujoy. She will be greatly missed by her many friends, sister in-laws, nieces, and nephews that survive her, and those who keep her memories close to their hearts in this time of mourning.
Smriti, known to many as “Tuni,” was born in Serampore, India January 20, 1942. She was the first in her family to obtain a university degree and further went on to complete her Master’s in political science. She contributed helping raise her brothers and sisters and many children of the community with her tutoring. She married and relocated to Toronto/Mississauga area. She became employed in administrative work while balancing her family and children’s needs. As family was of high importance to her, she continued to maintain an active life in India visiting often.
Smriti was loved and cherished by many who knew her and led a very fulfilling life. She will be deeply missed. A private memorial (Shraadha) ceremony will follow (TBA). Please reach out to the family for details if you would like to attend.
