Mable, Hubert G.

Hubert G. “Hugh” Mable
1925 – 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hubert G. “Hugh” Mable. Hugh passed away peacefully at Etobicoke General Hospital on August 4, 2025, at the age of 99. Born December 22, 1925 in St. Catharines, Hugh was the beloved husband of the late Pauline (“Polli”) Mable, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and companionship. A gifted Chartered Professional Accountant, Hugh served with distinction as the Chief CPA for the Auditor General of Canada in Ottawa for two terms. Hugh was a talented athlete, and throughout his life he remained an enthusiastic follower of sports. He also enjoyed reading the newspaper each day, staying engaged with current events. Brilliant and funny, he was always the most sought-after teammate in a game of Trivial Pursuit. Since 1956, Hugh and Polli treasured their summers at their cottage on Wood Lake, Muskoka, creating decades of memories with family and friends. Gentle by nature, Hugh faced life with grace and never a word of complaint. He will be remembered for his kindness, and steady presence in the lives of all who knew him.
He will be dearly missed by his sister-in-law Joan Smith (Arthur, deceased) of Edmonton, and her children and their families: the late Rob of Thunder Bay, Ont., Paul (Trish) Smith and Heather Gay of Edmonton, and the late Pamela Smith of Mississauga. Hugh’s memory will be cherished by Polli’s cousins: Richard “Rick” (Sue) of Qualicum Beach, B.C., the late Linda (David) Maw of Etobicoke, Marj (Chris, deceased) Kempffer of White Rock, B.C., Malcolm (deceased) along with their children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Wilfred Hart (Fred) and Mary (Carl) Mable and eldest nephew John of Kingston, Hugh’s picture was always present in his brother’s offices in Mable homes. His athletic excellence across sports was a shared legacy with his brother Wilfred from their father, Wilfred Booth of Thorold.
“Uncle Hub” is lovingly remembered by nieces and nephews: Elizabeth of Findhorn, Scotland, Brian of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Ann L. Mable (and John Marriott) of Wolfe Island and Kingston, and Wilfred Bruce of Kingston. Uncle Hub and Aunt Polli’s visits to the summer home at Wolfe Island were much anticipated, and Hub’s gentle demeanor, easy personality and sense of humor will long keep “Uncle Bubbles” in affectionate memory.
To Dr. Bruce and Audrey Bain and their sons, Hugh was like family and memories of summers at Wood Lake will be cherished. He will also be missed by members of the St. James United Church congregation.
A special thank you to the wonderful staff of Wesburn Manor, where Hubert resided since 2018, your care and compassion is much appreciated.
For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (www.camh.ca). A private service of remembrance will be held on November 6, 2025 at St. James United Church in Etobicoke.
