Long As I Can See The Light – Creedence Clearwater Revival

Put a candle in the window
‘Cause I feel I’ve gotta move
Though I’m goin’, goin’
I’ll be comin’ home soon
Long as I can see the light
Pack my bag and let’s get moving
‘Cause I’m bound to drift awhile
Though I’m gone, gone
You don’t have to worry
Long as I can see the light
Guess I’ve got that old travelin’ bone
‘Cause this feeling won’t leave alone
But I won’t, won’t
Be losin’ my way
Long as I can see the light
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Oh yeah
Put a candle in the window
‘Cause I…

The feeling of having somebody you know or love pass away is never easy. The process is always tough for the people left behind. However, the friends and family of the deceased loved one are not the only ones going through something. People have always believed that the departed souls embark on this journey that would “bring them home” sometimes just by following a sort of “light”. This is a theme that’s recurring in different cultures across time, the belief that people are journeying towards an afterlife has a deeply spiritual and ultimately comforting meaning to every person who feels pained by someone’s loss.

In the song Long As I Can See The Light by Creedence Clearwater Revival, it appears that the lyrics is coming from someone who’s about to leave off to somewhere, a place this person calls home and will be arriving soon and no, you don’t need to worry – as long as this somebody sees the light. The Country Blues vibe that this tune has definitely makes one feel like driving for a long stretch of road, like driving in mid-west or between the interstate, anything that makes you feel like you’re taking a very long trip.

This iconic song captures very well this ‘going away on a journey’ theme, this comforting feeling of nobody really ever dies, we just go to another phase, another chapter of life. This is something that helps people cope through the stages of grief so it isn’t necessarily a wrong thing to think about or believe regardless of whether somebody believes in a spiritual afterlife or not. We are human, we grieve for the loss of people whose memories we cherish. There is beauty in that, no matter how painful. And by honoring them through burial rituals like cremation ceremonies and the like, we make their passing much more poignant.
