Henry Cornelis Visscher
May 29, 1942-April 8, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Henry Visscher in his 84th year. He passed away peacefully at the Mississauga Hospital surrounded by family.
Henry is survived by his loving wife Josy (née Merz); his daughters Nicole Novakovics (Eric) and Erin Anderson (Murray); and his two grandsons, Fisher and Milo Novakovics. He is predeceased by his parents, Hendrik and Grace Visscher, and his sisters, Alice Karpow and Carla Price.
Henry will be fondly remembered by his extended family in Western Canada and abroad.
Henry was born in Zwolle, Holland and emigrated with his family to Canada in 1954, settling in Edmonton, Alberta. Early in his career he worked for the Edmonton Journal as a photographer/reporter, and he met Josy on one of his assignments; they married in June 1967. Henry graduated from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in 1969, after which he and Josy moved to Toronto. Henry had a successful 38-year career at Sheridan College and retired from his position as Coordinator/Professor of the Applied Photography Program in 2007.
Henry had a quick wit, and those who knew him enjoyed listening to stories he told with his terrific, wry sense of humour. He also loved to read and learn about various subjects – history being his favourite – and leaves behind a vast collection of books in both English and Dutch. Henry also thoroughly enjoyed driving, and he loved everything to do with cars.
The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate medical team at the Mississauga Hospital for their exceptional care during Henry’s illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation.
A memorial service for Henry will be held at St. John’s Dixie Cemetery and Crematorium (737 Dundas St. East, Mississauga) on Saturday, May 2 at 11:30am. Reception to follow.
