In Loving Memory of Frank Mu Hsien Liao
Frank Mu Hsien Liao, was born on August 10, 1941 in Jamshedpur, India. He passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026 surrounded by his loved ones.
Frank was a man defined by his industrious spirit, determination and quiet strength. As a young man he moved to Calcutta for better opportunities. He found work at the Waldorf Restaurant and worked his way up to the position of restaurant manager. It was here that he developed the skills and discipline that would shape his life’s work.
He went on to open Frank’s Chinese Restaurant in Jamshedpur in 1969 – a venture that not only marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey but also helped support and uplift his family. With perseverance and vision he later established Hsin Long Chinese Restaurant in Patna; where he and his beloved wife Margaret raised their three children.
In 2007 Frank moved to Canada to support his children and their growing families. Frank’s legacy continues through Frank’s Hakka Asian Cuisine in Mississauga, Canada.
A sincere and hardworking man, Frank was also deeply loving and kind. He was God-loving, gentle in nature and carried a quiet, peaceful presence that brought comfort to those around him. Though soft-spoken, his warmth was unmistakable. He had a natural sense of humor and a contagious laughter that could light up any room, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Throughout his life, Frank faced many challenges, yet he never allowed them to diminish his spirit -inspiring his family and friends to persevere and always strive for their best. He accepted people with an open heart and had the remarkable ability of making people feel accepted, valued and loved.
He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife Margaret, his children – Jimmy, Brian, Susan; their families and his cherished grandchildren – Evangeline, Ashlyn, Elaina, Ashton, Hayden and Aris.
Frank leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience and quiet strength. He now rests in peace, reunited with God and will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

“Dear family of Frank Mu Hsien Liao, Jimmy, Brian and Susan
I’m so sorry to hear about passing of Frank. He was a wonderful father to you all. I have seen how he worked his way to glory in Patna by establishing Hsin Long, probably first Chinese Restaurant in Patna. He was the who introduced Chinese cuisine to people of Patna and many of us a still swear by the expert culinary abilities of Frank, your beloved father – he built a true culinary legacy. My condolences to you and the whole family.

I was also born brought up in Jamshedpur and Franks is one of the bright spots in my childhood reminiscences. Remember playing badminton with Susan and her cousin Michael. Any significant celebration, Franks was one of the top spots. Miss the good old days and miss Jampot. One of the iconic places which are going to disappear except in the faint mists of memory for those who grew up in the 80s and 90s. RIP Mr Frank.

There are restaurants.
And then there are institutions that quietly become part of your life.
For me, Franks in Jamshedpur has been that constant since the 1980s.
Same flavours. Same warmth. Same unmistakable taste that somehow refuses to change with time.
In a world that is obsessed with reinvention, there’s something incredibly comforting about consistency. About walking into a place decades later and feeling like nothing has changed.
Every trip back to Jamshedpur feels incomplete without at least a few meals at Franks.
Not out of habit… but out of something deeper — nostalgia, memory, belonging.
And now, reading about Frank Mu Hsien Liao, it hits differently.
Because what he built wasn’t just a restaurant. It was a legacy that fed generations.
Some places serve food.
Some places serve time.
Franks has always done both.
May Frank’s Soul Rest In Peace 🙏

I send my condolences to the bereaved family. I will never forget ‘Frank’ Jamshedpur as I have very fond memories of sumptuous dinners with family and close friends. I’m still to find a Chinese restaurant that serves authentic Chinese food with such style, panache, taste and affordability.

Rest in peace Uncle. 🙏🏼 You were a gentle soul. I’m glad I was able to meet you last year however briefly. Hsin Long was truly an iconic restaurant of Patna but the food also facilitated many happy childhood memories of shared school tiffins.
All our love and condolences to Aunty, Susan, Jimmy, Brian and the whole family. ❤️
