~It is with deepest regret that we inform you of the passing of Elsa Mendonça e Flores~

Elsa passed away peacefully on September 21, 2023; a few weeks shy of her 93rd birthday. Elsa was the loving wife and forever “Amor” of the late Luiz Leopoldo Flores, mother (mother-in-law) of Carolina (Willburn), late Luis Carlos and Carmela (Blaine),     loving grandmother to Nathan, Ethan, Athena, Meagan and Arielle. Daughter of the late Vitinho Mendonça and late Ernestina Sousa e Mendonça and beloved sister (sister-in-law) of Lino (late Nina), late Gema (late Bernardo), late Ilda (late Joviano), late Luis (Lizette), Lira (late Teofilo), Vito (Terezinha). Beloved sister-in-law to Flores family:  Late Amelia (late Caetano), late Olinda (late Henry), late Clara (late Francisco), late Francisca, Delia and late Gil (Loretta). Loving aunt and grand-aunt to all her nieces and nephews.

Our sincerest gratitude goes to the medical team, staff and care workers who attended Elsa’s needs during her stay at the Post Inn Village in Oakville.

I remember A . Elsa as being a gentle lady, very affectionate, but quiet and self-effacing. Except when she spied a piano. Then she lit up the room. I picture her now, rounding up all the little angels and teaching them how to play the harp. Unless there are pianos in heaven? I don’t know. But enjoy your reward now, A Elsa, in the company of our Father and your beloved U Leopoldo and Luis Carlos. We miss you here but are very happy for you now🙏🏽🙏🏽

Our deep and heartfelt condolences to you Tulu, Carmela, Blaine and all the close family members of Elsa, on her passing away.
We all have the fondest memories of her, experienced the largeness of her heart and her pleasant countenance.

Both She and Pr. Leopoldo had a special and close bonding with our parent late Adolfo and Molly. Prima Elsa was blessed to grow old gracefully, spread her warmth around, impart her musical skills to many a student, she will be long remembered.

As she walks in to the arms of her Creator, may she discover everlasting contentment, simply because she deserves it. May her soul Rest In Peace.

    Our fondest love,
    Melissa and Owen Viegas.

Elsa, I met for the first time, in 2019 when I visited her & Caroline and family in Toronto, along with Tony. It was a very memorable visit and she was warm, gracious, charming and the epitome of love and kindness. I was so impressed with her ease and mastery of the keyboard, even at the age of 90! The melodies and meet up will always be fondly remembered. The Lord knew she was tired so he said “Come to me you who are weary & burdened and I will give you rest” (Matthew11:28-30). May Elsa’s gentle soul rest in God’s peace and embrace.

Caroline, Carmella & your families, there is no greater sorrow than to recall happiness in times of mourning. There is love in holding and love in letting go. May all your wonderful memories made & shared with your mum Elsa, comfort you during this heart-breaking time. Sending you healing prayers and heart-felt condolences during this tough time. God be with all of you.

When I was growing up, my mother and sister often told me a story of a wonderful little girl who was our next-door neighbor in Saligao, Goa. This young girl would raid our house daily to carry me off, as a baby to her house, and experimented with different hairstyles – even curls! She would place me on her lap and play the piano for me. I am told that I would anxiously await her arrival daily. That young girl was none other than Elsa Mendonca.
Years later, during my days at Majorda Beach Resort, I happened to bump into Leopold Figueredo and over a cup of coffee in my office, connections were made. He said “Oh you’re from Saligao? My wife is from Saligao -Elsa, Vitinho Mendonca’s daughter & my sister is also married in Saligao. Wow! What a small world! From that moment on I just wanted to see and meet up with her again. So, I invited them over to the Hotel for dinner, but Leopold insisted I visit them in their home first, for a drink. The very next day itself found me knocking on their door. Elsa, was all decked up, she kept hugging me & lovingly scratched my head and back, like she used to do in yester years.
As time went on, I left Goa and moved to the Gulf for work and from there to the US. I later learnt that Elsa was in Toronto, Canada. I got to speak with her over the phone several times. In 2019, we visited her in Toronto, just before her 90th birthday. I was delighted to see a shy lady, all decked up in heeled leather shoes and smiling from ear to ear. She came towards me and grabbed me in a loving embrace and began to scratch my back, rub my head like in the good old days. Throughout the evening she held my hand and kept looking at me. When I enquired -‘How are you Elsa?’, she spontaneously responded- “ Super”. After a while of chatting with me and the family she announced- “ Baba, I want to play the piano for you” and she did. She wowed us as her fingers moved so deftly, and she played several tunes. Her love and her music still ring in my ears and will as long as I live. I love you Elsa, you will always live in my heart. Thank you for loving me. May you rest in peace and play your melodies in your heavenly abode.

Dearest Carolina and Carmela and Families:

My Deepest Sympathies on the passing away of your dearest mother, Elsa.

My departed parents (Arlinda and George Fernandes, of Jinja, Uganda) were great friends with Elsa and Leopoldo, when we lived in Uganda, and I sincerely believe that George and Leopoldo, were as close as brothers, and their wives shared a special bond.

My early memories of Elsa were of a Charming and Outgoing Person, with Charisma, and a real zest for life, and a loving passion for looking after her family.

Elsa and Leopoldo showed great strength in weathering the shock of losing Luis Carl, and of leaving Uganda, and Elsa proved her indomitable strength at this tragic time.

Her personality and zest for life will be sorely missed.

    Sincere Condolences,

    Brian Fernandes

    Dear Caroline and Carmela,

We were sorry not to be able to attend in person – we are in Austin, Texas, returning Oct 8th. But we watched it via Live Stream, and heard the very nice homily given by Deacon Terry D’Silva. What we admired most is the Eulogy that you two gave at the end, extremely well done! Recounting mom’s early life and talents and her marriage to your dad. We remember them both with much love and affection! So many shared memories – in Uganda and here in Canada.

Edna spent so much time at Flores Limited, waiting for me to pick her up after work – she finished at 4.00pm and I at 4.30 pm – and was often late getting there. She did not complain because she enjoyed Elsa’s company and her laughter and joking with all the customers who walked in. Fun times! Dad, if I recall correctly, raised the toast at our Lynnette’s Christening celebration at the KGI.

And you did touch on the saddest part of her life, the passing of Lui-Carl, who had gone in for a “routine” tonsil operation, performed by a reputable surgeon, that led to disaster! That was a terrible day for all of us! But she has now caught up with him and her joy is complete with him, hubby Leopold and all pre-deceased relatives in the company of Our Lady and all the saints, in the House of our Lord!

So stay strong all of you. We send you our love and hugs.

    Edna and Al.

Dearest Carolina, Carmela, Willburn, Blaine and your families,
Words cannot express what you all must be feeling after the loss of a loved one. I only got to meet Pr Elsa and Pr Leopoldo for the first time during their holiday to the UK in 1998 I found so much warmth and affection that it remained with me. A year later I got to meet them in Goa and they made great efforts to find a bride for me and I am eternally grateful to then for finding my true life partner. Sadly, Pr Leopoldo died six months after my wedding but the friendship remains to this date. Such a pity that COVID put paid to celebrations of Pr Elsa’s 90th birthday as we had booked to be present. Anyway, she is reunited with her beloved Leopoldo. May Pr Elsa rest in Peace. With deepest sympathy Fausto, Savira, Ariana and Jianni.

On the Passing Away of Elsa Flores >
I first met Elsa in Margao, Goa Jan 1972 after the family had escaped Uganda. I was very young and Elsa became sort of a guide.
Then I visited her in Toronto in 1975(?) for the Christmas/New Year holidays away from my College in the US.
    Then we lost contact.
Yet I always yearned for a nostalgic get together which I tried several times. But somehow the phone calls did not connect.
Two years ago, while I was about to board a flight out of Toronto, I suddenly managed to connect to Caroline. She was so warm and handed the call to her mother. I guess Elsa recognized me, though I am not sure how accurate that was, as she was now 91 or so.
I made several plans to visit her in Toronto but somehow, they did not come through.
Finally, I confirmed by flight (and informed Caroline).
When my Emirates flight landed, I messaged Caroline about my arrival.
    She replied: “Mama died”
I took the next flight out of Toronto.
So, I will see her in Heaven with Jesus !!

Dear Carolina, Willburn, Nathan, Ethan, Athena, Elise, Carmela, Blaine, Meagan, and Arielle,

I’m so sorry to hear about Elsa. My deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. Elsa was a phenomenal person, one in billions. She taught me to appreciate music in a very new way, from Nat King Cole to the Blue Danube. I learned to play sudoku in different ways and had the opportunity to experience Goa through Elsa’s memories of her time there. She brought a lot of joy and warmth to my day, especially when much of the world was locked down. I’ll miss her and will forever remember her piano playing, enthusiasm, and kindness.

Please let me know whether my family and I can do anything or provide any support during this time.

Wishing you all the strength, peace, and solace during this difficult time. Elsa will forever be remembered in the many fond memories she created with myself and countless others. Our prayers are with you and your family.

I was deeply saddened by the news about your mum…… This must be a very difficult time for you…. You are in my thoughts and prayers…. your mum was such a kind and thoughtful person…. The best next door neighbour anyone could ever have in this world….she was always there to look after Dhananjay and me when we were at home alone without our parents… Infact my parents could travel out of Goa only because they would rest assured that your mum and all of you were there for us… Dhananjay is a musician today and he owes a lot to your mum for teaching him to play the piano….

I know how much you will miss your her, but take comfort, strength and courage, to bear this profound loss from the wonderful family she built around you.

I know their love will get you through this …. I wish we lived closer so that I could have helped you in these difficult times… May God bless you now and always ….

    Lots of love and hugs
