Direct Burial

Why Choose Direct Burial?

Direct burial is a simple, respectful burial option with no visitation and no formal funeral service before the burial. The focus stays on the essentials: care, documentation, and a timely burial at a licensed cemetery.

Many families choose direct burial when they want:

  • a straightforward process with fewer moving parts
  • a private goodbye without planning a full service right away
  • the ability to hold a memorial later, on their own timeline

In Ontario, embalming is not required by law, and direct burial is often chosen specifically because there is no viewing prior to burial. If there is a delay before burial, a provider may recommend embalming depending on the circumstances.

The Benefits of Direct Burial

A clear, simplified burial process with fewer decisions at the time of loss

No visitation or formal service required before the burial

Often avoids embalming when burial happens promptly

More privacy for families who prefer something quiet and immediate

Flexibility to plan a memorial service later (days, weeks, or months later)

Transparent, itemized pricing with guidance through required paperwork

Talk with Your Family

Direct burial can feel like the “least complicated” option—but it still helps to talk through a few details ahead of time so your family is not forced to guess.

Helpful questions to discuss:

  • Which cemetery would you want, and do you already own interment rights?
  • Would you want a brief graveside committal (if the cemetery allows it)?
  • Who should be contacted right away?
  • What would you want shared in an obituary or announcement?
  • Would you want a memorial gathering later, and what should it look like?

Get organized

When you arrange a direct burial, the steps are straightforward, but timing matters. Our team helps you complete the requirements and coordinate with the cemetery.

In most cases, the process includes:

  • arranging the initial transfer into our care
  • completing required documentation and permits
  • confirming the cemetery’s requirements and scheduling the burial
  • selecting a simple casket or suitable container that meets cemetery by-laws
  • final transfer to the cemetery for interment

Paying for the Arrangements

Direct burial costs usually fall into two categories:

1) Funeral home / transfer services (required minimum services)
Ontario requires a minimum set of non-declinable services needed to complete final disposition (burial). These typically include essential professional services, documentation, minimum preparation/shelter, and transfers. Additional fees may apply depending on circumstances (for example: mileage, a suitable rigid container, or pallbearers for burial).

2) Cemetery costs (paid to the cemetery)
Cemetery charges vary by location and may include items such as interment rights, interment/opening and closing fees, and care and maintenance contributions. Memorialization (marker/monument) is typically separate and depends on cemetery by-laws and your choices.

We explain what is included, what is optional, and what is paid directly to the cemetery—so your family can make decisions without guesswork

Recommendations

  • If you want people to gather, consider a memorial service after the burial—at your pace, in a setting that fits your family.
  • Ask about cemetery rules early (timing, graveside committal options, memorialization rules).
  • Keep key documents and contact details in one place so your family can act quickly when needed.
  • If you are planning ahead, review your choices every few years to keep them current.
