It is with great sadness and loving hearts that the family of Louie Cannella announces his passing at Hotel Dieu Shaver on February 24, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 84.
He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Kathy; his 2 grandchildren: Michael, Hannah (Brad) and his 2 great-grandsons: Wesley and Beau. He also leaves behind his sister, Anne, and his nephews, Jerry (Marsha) and Rob. He will be fondly remembered by his great-niece, Emile, and great-nephews, Connor, Braedon, Dawson, and Gabriel. Louie’s dear friends, Stephen and Diana, will also remember him with love. Predeceased by his parents Umberto & Graziella (née Luciani) and by his niece, and closest friend Debbie Petch.
Louie was born April 25, 1941 in Monte Urano, Italy, and came to Canada as a young lad. With an adventurous spirit, he spent much of his adult years living and working in the Yukon and Nova Scotia. He was a unique individual, with an easygoing nature and a wonderful sense of humour. Louie made friends everywhere he went, and there are many, from coast to coast, whom he considered family.
In later years, Louie volunteered for the cancer society, as well as the Canadian National Institute for the blind. He spent several years cooking for the Salvation Army. We are proud to say that he received a special award from the city of St. Catharines for his generous service to others. In his spare time, Louie enjoyed playing games and was competitive in chess and bridge.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the medical teams involved in his extensive care, with special gratitude to the nurses at the Niagara Falls dialysis clinic (for over 20 years), and to Dr. Bagchee-Clark, who guided us through his palliative care journey.
In keeping with Louie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Tranquility Burial & Cremation Services (Niagara) Inc. Condolences can be shared at tranquility-cremation.local/.

Louie was one of a kind. Amazing man, amazing heart, amazing spirit. I had not seen Louie for more than 40 years but he always held a special place in my heart…and always will. Heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends. Rest easy, my friend. 💕
