Ahrens, Barbara Adrienne
January 22, 1937 – March 3, 2026
At home in her bed, Barb moved on from this world in her 90th year. Her family will forever celebrate her contribution to our lives and to the many that benefitted from her generosity. Barb was the beloved wife of Bruce for 57 wonderful years. She was a loving and devoted mother to Lisa (Ken), Nadine (Francois), and predeceased by son Chris. She was a champion and hero to her grandchildren: Tom (Brandi), Jenna (Jake), Kolton (Jen), Claudine (Dejan), and Brianna (Jaxon). Born in Toronto to the late Alex and Adrienne Ahern. Barb is also predeceased by her sisters Beverly (Warren) and Linda (Gary).
Her career began as a receptionist with Golden Mile Motors and Alex Irvine Chevrolet in Scarborough. She was a master at the PBX switchboard. Her interpersonal skills were admired but underutilized until she was persuaded by Bruce to attempt a career as a Real Estate Agent. Here she blossomed. Focusing on the Scarborough, Markham and Unionville market, she became recognized as a top agent for Royal Trust/Lepage in the eighties. In one year, she sold 98 houses and was the top agent in Canada. Her success was based on honesty and finding the right house/client match. Many clients became lifelong friends.
Barb was well known for her culinary skills. She enjoyed entertaining both clients and friends. She was on a first name basis with Jacques Pepin, sharing his kitchen on a cruise. In her retirement years she was a sous-chef to a number of Canadian chefs at the LCBO Cooking School in Burlington.
We cannot forget her passion for tennis. Her mean overhand smash won her championships both at the Guildwood Tennis Club and at Cleveland’s House Tennis Week.
Following retirement Barb and Bruce enjoyed time at sea with Seabourn and Oceania and winters on Lido Beach in Sarasota. With declining health, her passion was transferred to Casino Niagara where she demonstrated her magic.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to join the family for the Celebration of Life at the Algonquin Club, 3548 Algonquin Drive, Ridgeway on March 28, 2026 at 2:00 pm. Arrangements have been entrusted to Tranquility Burial & Cremation Services (Niagara) Inc. Condolences can be shared at tranquility-cremation.local/
Thanks Barbie for sharing your life with us.

Barb was one of a kind. Loving caring and stylish always throwing fancy outfits and amazing hair. She was such a good cook famous for her unforgettable garlic bread. Above all, she loved her family deeply, and her kindness and warmth will be missed by all who knew her.

I am so incredibly proud and grateful to be the eldest granddaughter of Barb and Bruce. Being one of their grandchildren is such a gift that will forever be cherished by each of us. Our Nana will be missed every day by many. Her presence was a steady, comforting light as the matriarch in our family. Though our hearts ache without her, she will carry forward in all of us: in the stories and memories we share, in the recipes we cook, in the lessons she taught, and in the quiet moments when we feel her love surrounding us. She will always be my greatest inspiration, in the way she loved, in the way she cared for others, and in the grace and resilience she showed throughout her life. I hope to continue to live in a way that makes her proud, just as she has always made me proud to be her granddaughter.
Love you!!

Bruce and family,
Barb will be sorely missed by many of us in the Algonquin Club community. A lovely woman whose smile could light up a room and have people laughing with her at the drop of a hat. We will remember Barb every time we hear the song “Georgia” as we know it was likely her favourite to dance to with Bruce!
Rest easy Barb, you will be missed.

Barb was one of the first people I met when I moved back to Ontario, to Ridgeway By the Lake. She was always friendly and kind to me being a new widow in a new neighbourhood. She was loving and compassionate, and I was grateful to know her. She was always at the Lady’s Happy Hours and always had interesting stories to share. She loved a good time, and she will be missed.

My beautiful, kind, loving, witty, and fun Momma—my heart is shattered knowing you are no longer here with us. The pain of losing you is deeper than I can put into words, yet I feel incredibly blessed to have been your daughter and to have shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories with you.
You were not only the best Mom, but an extraordinary mother-in-law and the most loving Nannie and wife. You had a way of making everyone feel special, safe, and deeply loved. Your warmth, your humour, and your spirit filled every room and every heart lucky enough to know you.
I will carry our memories with me forever. I already know there will be so many moments when I reach for my phone to call you—like we did two or three times every single day—only to stop and remember I can’t hear your voice on the other end. I will miss your gentle kisses, your hugs, your laughter, and the comfort only you could give me. No words will ever fully express how much I will miss you.
You were one of the most selfless people I have ever known. You gave so much of yourself to everyone around you, always putting others before yourself. I know in my heart you would want me to keep living, loving, and moving forward until the day we are reunited again.
The world feels dimmer without you in it. I have always been so proud to call you my Momma, and I will continue telling anyone who will listen about how amazing you were—how cool, stylish, talented, beautiful, and funny my mother was. You were truly one of a kind.
I will carry your love with me for the rest of my life. You will live forever in my heart forever- I love you for eternity Momma.

John and I were saddened to hear of Barbara’s passing. She was just a classy lady so strong kind and positive Pat had the most delightful chat with her at Algonkin Christmas cocktail. She was so lighthearted, enjoying the children playing the piano. She also spoke of the loving care that Bruce continually gave her and mentioned how blessed she felt with his and her families constant love and support an angel for sure. Missing her already Pat and John Sally.

All my heart goes out to the entire family. I will always cherish the memories of visiting Barbara and Bruce with Chloe in the summer – our pizza outings, sharing stories over wine on the back patio, and enjoying Barbara’s homemade desserts. It was such a joy to meet her, laugh with her, and learn from her. She will be deeply missed, and I hope she is reunited with her best friend and enjoying peaceful days in the sun.
Sending the warmest hug and my condolences to Bruce, Nadine, Chloe, Brie, and Francois.

I am so saddened to hear of Barb’s passing. She was such an elegant, fun loving lady, always so warm and genial. It would make my day to run into her and Bruce at the casino which I often did. She was like a child at the casino, so excited to play the machines, so joyful at winning, wanting to share with me what machines she had played on for her wins. I would ask, are you winning Barb?, and with the biggest smile , her answer was I’m always winning. I will miss her wonderful sense of humour and her joy in life.
My deepest condolences to you and your family Bruce.

We will never forget
– how you took us under your wing and found us a condo to rent near yours in Sarasota when we first moved to RBTL and expressed our interest in snowbirding in Florida
– how you introduced us to the classiest bars and restaurants in Sarasota
– our visits to all the jazz bars with all your friends
– the lightest calamari ever at Hyde Park with you
– Barb’s excellent dinner parties
– Barb’s hilarious one-liners
You two gave us so much and asked for nothing in return. We love you both.
Our greatest sympathies are with you and your wonderful supportive family. Barb was one fun and classy lady who we will miss dearly. We feel blessed to have shared her with you in our life.

• I have so many great memories of my mother in law Barbara Ahrens. I just don’t have enough words to share all my good times with my 35 years with her. She was so generous, kind, loving, joyful, happy, kind lady and can’t forget the best chef I ever known. I am so grateful to have been able to have known her over all these years. I will always have my memories of her with me.
• Just a few that I will never forget
• Our Florida visit with our family (Sarasota, Panama beach, Lido beach)
• Nadine and I will always remember the time in Panama City we found out that she was pregnant. It did not take long for Barb to figure it out. After asking Nadine to have some wine and Nadine replied no thanks. She figured it out very quickly. It was so special share the news with her that she was going to be a grandmother.
• Her Famous Carrot cake – She never ever forgot to show up with her carrot cake – Just like her to never forgot to bring the goodies.
• Can’t forget the Barb Ahrens famous Margarita. This always got the atmosphere chatting.
• She always had treats and goodies for the girls,
• She taught me the good things in life. Wine, food and family. Can’t forget that amazing lasagna she used to make, that has now been passed down to her daughter Nadine.
• Found the best Blues Band ever for our wedding – she was out one night at the bar called the Boat House in Burlington and heard this blues band. By then end of the night she had booked them for our wedding. She was not going to take no for an answer, and she closed the deal that night. Just like she closed all her real estate deals.
• Will Always cherish the time we spent at Cleavland House in Muskoka.
• Cant forget her lovely voice of singing happy birthday to me
• All the many events we shared with her (ice shows, concerts, musicals, Plays, etc.…)
• Her excitement of winning at the casino.
I could go on and on because there is so much more to cherish and remember her over the years.
It will not be the same without her, but her memories will always be with us and always in our hearts.
Tu vas toujours nous manquer – We will always miss you

Dear Bruce –
This is a word of great THANKS to you for our years of wonderful friendship, but especially for you having met and married your beautiful Barb. Even more important are you for having introduced her to me and Heather. This shared and enriched our lives so very much by her loving and wonderful personality which is so beautifully described in all the other tributes, which also increase the fun, joys and happiness that you two have given over the years!
That’s why our grief is now so profound, because all her personal gifts were so boundless and sincere; those are what we will keep remembering and enjoying!
Sincerely –
Dieter

From the first time Dieter took me to meet his best friend, Bruce, and family, Barb welcomed me warmly and sincerely. She found out very quickly how much I love chocolate and desserts, and thereafter she always made something extra special for me at each of our visits. She always showed her love with her beautiful, welcoming smile, her warm, bubbly laughter and her incredible gourmet delights.
I have fond memories of good times spent together at our Arden cottage, in our temporary home in Germany, winter visits in Florida, and at each of their beautiful homes over the years.
The first and foremost conversation which began every visit was Barb’s update on her incredible grandchildren. Her pride always shone through.
Fly with the angels, Barb.

One entertaining moment I can share… I’ve been a friend of the family since my high-school years a few decades ago. One summer afternoon, I was the lucky guest of Barb to watch a Jay’s game at Skydome. Before the end of game, Barb commented to me it would be nice if the Blur Jays management office would donate the unsold tickets to homeless and underrepresented fans. Playing the part of devil’s advocate, I positioned myself 100% against it. We had a fun but heated conversation where I was exposed to Barb’s generosity trait embedded in her heart & soul; an advocate for the not so fortunate. This is not only something I’ve seen in Barb that day at Skydome, but also a life lesson and endearing memory I’ve been carrying since.

Barb was a lovely lady and great friend. We had some really great times together. I recall with a smile Barb overseeing B and B Construction when we deveoped the basement and built the little pool house at your home. Also the visit you and Barb made to England when Carole and I were living in Windsor. Who could forget the great meals the four of us had together, great food, fine wine and tons of laughter. I trust that all the pleasant memories of Barb and your lives together will see you through this time of sadness.
