John Hnatko

1944 – 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John George Hnatko of Etobicoke on October 26, 2025, after a brief illness. John was a beloved husband to the late Jill Margaret and a cherished brother, uncle, and friend.

He is survived by his sister Mary (Dan), brother Peter (Arlene),  sister-in-law Dina (the late Sam) and brother-in-law Paul (the late Gwendolyn), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  And not to be forgotten childhood friends including Don Chamik who was at his side until the end. John was predeceased by brother Joe (Sophie).

John was born January 29, 1944 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto, to loving parents Mike and Anna. An idyllic life in the Perth Ave. community of playing pickup hockey, baseball, hanging with his friends, running home to sumptuous meals prepared by Mum changed forever when he met Jill. For 40 years John and Jill were in love, and they built a happy stable home in Etobicoke, occasionally disrupted by Charlie the cat. They travelled extensively, particularly to the southern beaches of Mexico. And golf, John’s other passion which explains the golf ball clutched in his hand at the final viewing.

The family extends special thanks to his nieces Katherine and Michelle, whose unwavering support and care during the late stages of his life were deeply appreciated.

John, you are missed and will live on in our hearts and memories.

I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. Many good times were shared with John and Jill over the years, traveling, parties, and shenanigans. The boys who have already left us will be glad to have John amongst them to continue the good times.
