Frederick Mon-Quong Lee
July 10, 1930 ~ October 13, 2023
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Frederick Mon-Quong Lee after a sudden short illness. At the age of 93, Fred has had a long and fulfilling life. With his own father living well past 100, we thought his time with us would have been a bit longer.
Born in Vancouver, Fred was the 5th of 8 children and now joins his father Sam, mother See, brothers Monty, Eddie and David, and sisters Margret, Siu-King and Jessie.
He is survived by his wife Lai Kwan (nee Fong), sons Abraham (Tu-Ngoc) and John-Paul (Alice), and sister Mary (Wayming).
Fred has had many careers in his life. He moved to Toronto from Vancouver to pursue his passion of becoming an opera singer. He had lengthy stints with both Canada Customs and Canada Post. What he is perhaps most well-known for is his acting career.
Fred was an avid martial artist with a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo and a love of Kung Fu movies. A friend in his martial arts club suggested that he audition for some bit parts. He started out with non-speaking background roles and rose to become a character actor working in commercial, television and film, best known for his part as the loudest singing waiter in A Christmas Story.
Fred was also a lifelong sports fan, always rooting for the Toronto Blue Jays.

I want to thank Mr. Lee for his role in “ A Christmas Story” It is a classic “ must watch” Christmas movie that our family loves to watch every year. Some years one of the channels plays it for 24 hours straight. His singing at the restaurant was awesome!! The restaurant scene is our favorite! I am sure his life was blessed with many rich experiences. We thank him for being one of ours.
