In Loving Memory of Sophia Atlidakis

(1933 – 2025)

Sophia Atlidakis, born in Harakopio, Messinia, Greece, was the second youngest of seven children. Sophia met her beloved husband, Stavros, while working in the textile industry in Piraeus, Greece. They married in 1957 and shared 57 wonderful years together until his passing in 2014.

They were blessed with three children: Angela (predeceased husband Nicholas, 2019), Kelli (Costa), and Michael. She was a proud grandmother to Dina (Thanasi), Mike (Simona), and Adam; and a devoted great-grandmother to Sophia, Calliope, Dimitri, and Nicolas.

Sophia and Stavros emigrated to Canada, first settling in Leamington, Ontario, before making London, Ontario, their lifelong home. She worked and retired from the textile industry in London.

A devout follower of the Greek Orthodox Church, Sophia drew strength from her faith, which carried her through life’s challenges. She twice overcame cancer and faced illness with courage and an unwavering determination to become well. She met each day with a steadfast choice to embrace happiness and life.

Sophia was known for her open door and generous spirit, always ready with food, sweets, and gifts of flowers, vegetables, and plants for anyone who visited. She embraced life’s simple pleasures. A devoted homemaker in her later years, she spent her days cooking, baking, sewing, and, thanks to her remarkable green thumb, tending to her flourishing gardens, admired by neighbours and passersby alike. Her home was filled with gentle melodies as she hummed or sang throughout the day. She loved her flowers, vegetable garden, and fruit trees, believing they were all living things with spirits of their own. She would sing to them softly, touching their leaves and branches as if they were her children, nurturing them with the same love and care she gave her family. Her warmth, kindness, giving nature and love touched everyone and everything around her.

Sophia passed away on November 1, 2025, due to complications of pneumonia and cardiovascular disease.

As a dialysis nurse I had the privilege of getting to know her.
She was like a sweet European grandmother-never complaining, even when things were difficult, and always grateful for the care she received
She truly enjoyed it when I played Greek music for her.
She was very special.
My deepest condolences to her family
