Home – Chris Daughtry

I’m staring out into the night
Trying to hide the pain
I’m going to the place where love
And feeling good don’t ever cost a thing
And the pain you feel is a different kind of pain

I’m going home
Back to the place where I belong
And where your love has always been enough for me
I’m not running from
No, I think you got me all wrong
I don’t regret this life I chose for me
But these places and these faces are getting old
So I’m going home
Well, I’m going home

The miles are getting longer it seems
The closer I get to you
I’ve not always been the best man or friend for you
But your love remains true
And I don’t know why
You always seem to give me another try

So I’m going home
Back to the place where I belong
And where your love has always been enough for me
I’m not running from
No, I think you got me all wrong
I don’t regret this life I chose for me
But these places and these faces are getting old

Be careful what you wish for
‘Cause you just might get it all
You just might get it all
And then some you don’t want
Be careful what you wish for
‘Cause you just might get it all
You just might get it all, yeah

Oh, well I’m going home
Back to the place where I belong
And where your love has always been enough for me
I’m not running from
No, I think you got me all wrong
I don’t regret this life I chose for me
But these places and these faces are getting old
I said these places and these faces are getting old
So I’m going home, I’m going home

Death is both a terrifying and at the same time a very enlightening experience. We, who are healthy and very much alive may have difficulty understanding this concept yet we hear of people who came so close to death and changed their life views and their personalities in a major way. This was because they thought life is too short to be wasted on this and that and we must do what we can as if we are going to die tomorrow. Wise people such as Ghandi and the ancient Greek philosophers like Marcus Aurelius and even modern-day geniuses like the late Steve Jobs.

Chris Daughtry’s Home is a very personal song for him yet it can resonate with many of us and for whatever reason. It might not have to be the same as the reasons why this artist wrote the song but judging from the lyrics, it can fit a narrative that suits the situation you find or found yourself in. This could be a nice funeral song for somebody who’s lived a long and satisfying life. This act of “going home” could mean the return to the Heavens to meet his maker. Take for instance, in the first stanza, in the beginning, the speaker talks to feeling pain and being in the middle of the night, experiencing some sort of suffering, it seems. Then the speaker seeks out to go to a place of unconditional love, where “..feeling good don’t ever cost a thing.” This could very well refer to home, his little corner in heaven.

The second verse introduces us to a persona the speaker talks highly about. This adoration for this persona comes with a little bit of guilt, saying that “…I’ve not always been the best man or friend for you/ But your love remains true/ And I don’t know why/ You always seem to give me another try.”  This leads us to the chorus where we see an anticipation from the speaker to simply go home, to the place where he belongs. There we get a glimpse of this persona again where the speaker says this persona’s love has always been enough for him. These lines could easily be referring to Jesus Christ.

The song pretty much closes with an advice or perhaps a point of epiphany from the speaker that tells us to “…be careful what [we] wish for.” because we just might get it all. This song just overall fits somebody who was wise and inspirational for his or her funeral song if you are looking for unique cremation ideas.
